I am a Registered Psychologist in the Province of Alberta
and I provide counselling to Individual Adults.
I work with a variety of people with a variety of concerns.
Some of the unique populations I work with are listed below with descriptions. However, my practice is not limited to these populations.
Workplace stress, trauma, or burn-out can be very defeating, especially for someone who is used to being the one in control of the situation. As a previous probation officer I have lived experience as a frontline worker and insight into the culture and challenges first responders face. I have even recovered from burn-out myself.
I emphasize three things: (1) You are not alone; (2) It's okay to not be okay; (3) Healing is possible. Together we can create strategies to breathe life back into life.
Many people experiencing burn-out also suffer from panic attacks and this is something I can support you with.
I have a passion for supporting the healing journeys of Indigenous people. While I am non-Indigenous, I am both culturally informed and experienced. Throughout my career (since 2006) I have served Indigenous people, communities, and organizations via a variety of roles, both on and off the reserve.
It is important for Indigenous people to have a voice, so I have intentionally create a safe space for you to share your story.
I am a provider with:
While I identify as heterosexual and cisgender, I do hold a safe space for people of the queer community. I believe it is important I am transparent about this so you don't have to ask.
A special note to those who still suffer...whether you are overindulging in substances and want to get a handle on it; you think you may have an addiction and know you need help; or you recently relapsed and need some extra support...I'm here to help!
Addictions Counselling is my number one passion and area of expertise. My entire career has had a running theme of supporting those struggling with substance abuse via a variety of roles and settings. I have experience in both abstinence based and harm reduction approaches and I view addiction as the symptom, rather the problem. In other words, substance use is a strategy to cope with pain, trauma, stress, or unmet needs and my job is to support you to find and apply other solutions to improve your quality of life. One of my strategies is to help you desensitize your substance use triggers to make life more manageable.
I also have my own personal experience with addiction and recovery. There is hope. Let's connect!
I work from a holistic lens, grounded in Person Centered Therapy.
Having a holistic lens means that I will invite you to consider the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your wellbeing and how they intersect to contribute to your mental health. Having a Person Centered approach means you as the client you will direct the focus of each session and you will decide what you want your therapy experience to be. I'm flexible and adaptive!
My communication style is influenced by Motivational Interviewing (which includes open ended questions to elicit your internal truth), in combination with my straightforward personality. Respect, kindness, and humour are always part of the mix! Cultural sensitivity is also of the utmost importance.
When it comes to tools and strategies I am eclectic. This means I pull from a variety of modalities including (but not limited to): Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy. Whatever works for you!
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy) is an evidence-based practice recommended for treatment of PTSD. The belief is that past emotionally charged experiences are overly influencing your present experience. EMDR uses a set of procedures to organize your negative and positive feelings, emotions, and thoughts, and then uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tactile buzzers) as the way to help you effectively work through those disturbing memories.
Please note a diagnosis of PTSD is not required, as EMDR works with big and little traumas, otherwise known as negative experiences that keep you stuck in patterns that don't serve you in the present day.
I utilize the Desensitization of Triggers and Urge Reprocessing (DeTUR) Protocol for substance abuse which supports the desensitization of substance use triggers and decreases the need to use substances to cope with everyday life.
